Canadiens Surprise Panthers

The Montreal Canadiens stun the Florida Panthers 3-1 on Saturday night at Bell Centre. The Panthers continued their six-game road swing and were the showcase game on Hockey Night In Canada.
The Cats will participate in their third contest during a four-day period tomorrow at the New York Islanders. The Canadiens remained in one of the two Eastern Conference wild-card spots in the standings.
Montreal(32-27-7) broke out to a 1-0 lead at the 5:15 mark of the first period on the man advantage. Cole Caufield passed from the right wing and Lane Hutson angled a pass from the top of the zone. Patrick Laine snapped a shot from the left circle for his 16th goal this season.
The Habs made it 2-0 with 4:04 left in the first. Juraj Slafkovsky forwarded the puck from the high slot area. Caufield placed in a spinning shot from below the left circle past Sergei Bobrovsky for his 33rd goal of the campaign.
Florida(41-23-3) answered back at 3:51 of the second period. Carter Verhaeghe cycled the puck from the left wing. Mackie Samoskevich received it behind the net, circled to the low left circle and put in a wrist shot by Sam Montembeault for his 13th tally of the year. Sam Bennett picked up a secondary assist on the play.
The Canadiens regained a two-goal margin 3-1 at the 8:11 mark of the third period. David Savard fired a shot from the right point and Christian Dvorak deflected it in from the inner right circle for his seventh goal in 2024-25.
