It was the first time that a South Florida professional sports team played an official game in any league. The last time a local sports club participated in a contest was when the Miami Heat hosted the Charlotte Hornets on March 11.
Inter Miami FC and Orlando City SC faced each other in a regular season tilt for the first time ever. The last time two Florida based teams played on the same MLS pitch was the Miami Fusion against the Tampa Bay Mutiny in 2001.
There was no scoring in the first half of the contest. Inter Miami CF would take a 1-0 lead in the 46th minute. Midfielder Victor Ulloa placed a pass from the right side and forward Juan Agudelo scored on a left-footed shot in the middle of the field from five yards out into the bottom left corner of the net.
Orlando City SC tied the contest in the 70th minute. Midfielder Nani made a left-footed cross from outside the left side of the penalty area and forward Chris Mueller slid with a one-time right-footed shot from three yards away into the low right corner of the cage.
The game went into extra time and Orlando City FC pulled ahead 2-1 during the 97th minute. Nani booted in a left-footed shot from eight yards away in the middle after a broken-up loose ball came to him.
The game result will count toward the regular season standings. Inter Miami CF has yet to win their first MLS contest and now are 0-2-1. It was the first victory for Orlando City SC in their last 11 games going back to last year.
