The Apopka Blue Darters overcame the Palm Beach Central Broncos 27-24 at Broncos Stadium in a FHSAA Class 4M state semifinal clash on Friday night in Wellington. Apopka(11-3) advanced to the state championship game for the second straight season. It was the first time in school history that Palm Beach Central(12-2) reached the state semifinal round.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Blue Darters took the lead 6-0 on a 20-yard touchdown run two minutes into the second quarter. Apopka missed the extra point and had a six-point margin.
Palm Beach Central answered back as quarterback Ahmad Haston went around the right end and ran the ball in from 10 yards away with over seven minutes left the second. The extra point gave the Broncos a 7-6 lead.
The Broncos extended their lead to 14-6 with 2:01 remaining in the first half. Running back Jason Laloi blasted through the middle from three yards out.
In the third quarter, Palm Beach Central reached the end zone for a 21-6 lead with seven minutes left. Haston threw a four-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Nedrick Boldin.
The Blue Darters closed the gap with less than two minutes to go in the third. Quarterback Tyson Davison rushed down the middle of the field for a 29-yard touchdown. They missed another kick on the point-after-touchdown and were down 21-12.
Apopka found the end zone with nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Running back Rashad Watson was able to dash in from eight yards away and they were down by two points. The Broncos responded with an 18-yard field goal and led 24-19.
The Blue Darters reclaimed the lead with 1:50 left in fourth on a one-yard touchdown run by Davison. Watson ran it in on a two-point conversion for a 27-24 lead.
