The Chaminade-Madonna Lions challenge the Clearwater Central Catholic Marauders in the FHSAA Class 1M state championship game at Gene Cox Stadium in Tallahassee on Thursday night. It is the first FHSAA football state title game to be played in 2022.
Chaminade-Madonna(12-0) will be making their seventh consecutive state title game appearance. The Lions, who captured the FHSAA Class 3A state championship last year, will be looking to win their fifth state title in the last six years along with their seventh overall. Chaminade-Madonna have outscored their opponents 610-126 this season. The Lions are currently riding a 23-game winning streak. They blanked Avant Garde Academy 48-0 in the regional semifinal, defeated Cardinal Newman 49-16 in the regional final and walloped True North Academy 56-0 in the regional final.
Lions quarterback Cedrick Bailey can help them march down the field with his passing. Running backs Davion Gause and Jeremiah Avrilien will get their share of rushing opportunities. Wide receivers Jeremiah Smith, Joshisa Trader, Edwin Joseph and Duane Thomas Jr. look to make pass receptions from Bailey.
Clearwater Central Catholic(12-1) has outscored their opponents 454-193 this season and have won 11 consecutive games. The Marauders pounded Indian Rocks Christan 63-12 in a regional quarterfinal, knocked off Carrollwood Day 21-11 in a regional final and got by University Christian 34-29 in a regional final.
The Marauders will rely on quarterback Jershaun Watson who can run and pass out of the pocket. Running back Lenwood Sapp is expected to get the majority of their rushing attempts. The primary targets for Watson are wide receivers Nate Johnson, Julian Allen, Luis Sanchez and David Green.
