The Carol City Chiefs got by the Lake Gibson Braves 14-6 in the Class 6A state championship at Camping World Stadium in Orlando on Saturday. The Chiefs won their first state title since 2003 and fifth overall.
Defense dominated early as neither team was able to score in the first half. Carol City(11-3) got out in front at 5:37 of the third quarter when running back Nay'quan Wright scored on a one-yard touchdown run for a 6-0 lead.
The Chiefs scored early in the fourth quarter as Wright again ran the ball in from one yard away at 11:24. Wide receiver Kevaughn Dingle converted on the two-point conversion on a running play to give them a 14-point margin.
Lake Gibson(13-1) moved back into the contest as wide receiver Mytrevious Link caught a 20-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Kevaris Thomas. The extra point was blocked and the Braves were down 14-6 with 6:00 remaining.
