The Chaminade-Madonna Lions fell to the Trinity Christian Academy Conquerors 24-13 in the FHSAA Class 3A state championship at Camping World Stadium in Orlando on Saturday. The Conquerors captured their fourth consecutive Class 3A title in the process.
It just took the first play from scrimmage for Chaminade-Madonna(10-4) to get on the scoreboard. Running back Shaun Shivers powered through with an 80-yard touchdown run 15 seconds into the game to take a 7-0 lead.
Trinity Christian Academy(11-3) answered back on their first possession to tie the game at 8:26. Quarterback D.J. Matthews threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Isaiah Washington.
In the second quarter, the Lions were able to regain the lead. Daniel Longman kicked a 23-yard field goal at the 9:57 mark.
The Conquerors responded on their next possession to go up 14-10 at 7:49. Running back Rasheed Martin rushed in from 13 yard away for a score.
Chaminade-Madonna turned the ball over on their next drive as Shaun Wade intercepted a pass thrown by quarterback Henry Columbi at the Lions 30-yard line. It led to a touchdown run by Matthews from 21 yards out with 4:41 left in the second.
The Lions had a 68-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown called back with 3:35 left in the third quarter when game officials declared that Wade had his knee down on a fake field goal when carrying the ball on fourth down. Chaminade-Madonna took over and scored on their ensuing possession as Longman nailed a 30-yard field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter at 11:55 to close the gap 21-13.
Tyreke Johnson returned the kickoff for Trinity Christian Academy 53 yards to the Lions 37-yard line. After the Lions roughed the punter, Frankie Onate blasted a 52-yard field goal on the next play to give the Conquerors a 24-13 with 8:50 left in the fourth.
