Francisco Cervelli Retires

Miami Marlins catcher Francisco Cervelli retired on Saturday. He made his announcement to end his 13-year Major League Baseball career. His last contest was when pitcher Sixto Sanchez made his major league debut on August 22.
Cervelli signed a one-year contract with the Marlins earlier this year. He was used as a backup catcher on the Miami roster behind Jorge Alfaro.
He did help the Marlins make their first postseason appearance since 2003. Cervelli played 16 games of the shortened 60-game regular season. He compiled three runs, seven runs batted in and a .245 batting average.
Cervelli made stops with the New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates and Atlanta Braves. He contributed to the Yankees winning their last World Series in 2009.
