It was rare 7:45 puck drop to begin a regular season contest in Sunrise. The National Hockey League had all 32 clubs play on the same day for just the second time in history. All 16 games were scattered at different start times.
Neither team scored in the opening frame. San Jose(0-5-1) got a power-play goal at 8:30 of the second period when Fabian Zetterlund scored on a wrist shot from the left of the crease for a 1-0 lead.
Florida(3-3-0) would take charge for the rest of the period. Carter Verhaeghe chalked up his third goal of the year on a snap shot from the low right circle at the 9:48 mark. Matthew Tkachuk, who passed the puck from behind the net, and Eetu Luostarinen were credited with assists on the play.
The Panthers took the lead 2-1 on the power play with 4:37 left in the second. Sam Reinhart picked up his seventh goal of the season on a rebound shot from the top of the crease with assists from Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Evan Rodrigues. Reinhart extended his goal streak up to five games.
In the third period, the Sharks pulled their goalie for an extra attacker to start a power play with 3:14 to go. The Cats closed it out on a empty-net goal with 1.5 seconds remaining. Tkachuk fed a square pass at the red line and Kevin Stenlund snapped a shot from the top of the zone.
