Panthers Edge Capitals

The Florida Panthers got by the Washington Capitals 3-2 in overtime at Amerant Bank Arena on Saturday night. Both teams met each other in the same venue just 16 days ago. Alexander Ovechkin, who had his 10-game point streak snapped, played in his 1,400 NHL game.
After a scoreless first frame, Florida(38-16-4) was able to get in front 1-0 at the 4:03 mark of the second period. Nick Cousins marked his third goal of the year when he tipped in the puck following a slap shot by Dmitry Kulikov from the right point.
Washington(26-21-9) matched it on the power play with 1:29 remaining in the second. Sonny Milano compiled his sixth goal of the campaign on a wrist shot from the right of the crease.
The Capitals moved in front 2-1 with the man advantage at 10:11 of the third period. Tom Wilson carried the puck in through the right circle and backhanded a shot from the top of the crease by Anthony Stolarz for his 13th tally of the season.
The Cats evened it up 2-2 on power-play goal with 3:30 left in the third. Carter Verhaeghe snapped a shot from the high slot and Aleksander Barkov collected his 13th goal this season as he redirected it from the crease area.
The Panthers completed the comeback victory 3:41 into overtime. Sam Bennett fed a diagonal pass from above the left circle and Gustav Forsling blasted a one-time slap shot from the low right circle for his ninth goal in 2023-24.
