Panthers Scoot By Red Wings

The Florida Panthers got by the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 in a shootout on Saturday at Amerant Bank Arena. The Panthers clinched a postseason spot just two days ago. They are now 2-5-1 in their last eight games.
The Cats leaped by the Boston Bruins for first place in the Atlantic Division. The Red Wings are one point behind the Washington Capitals for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
Detroit(36-30-8) pulled out to a 1-0 lead on the power play with 9:39 left in the opening period. Broward County native Shayne Gostisbehere angled a pass from the top of the zone. David Perron zipped a cross-ice pass from the left wing and Robby Fabbri snapped a shot from the right circle past Sergei Bobrovsky for his 17th goal this season.
After a scoreless second period, Florida(47-22-5) tied the contest 1-1 with 7:39 left in the third. Aleksander Barkov made a lead pass in the neutral zone to Aaron Ekblad, who just came out of the penalty box. Ekblad entered the Red Wings zone, darted up the middle and put a soft shot on net from the top of the crease. Barkov followed with a wrist shot from the right of the crease past Alex Lyon for his 20th goal of the season.  It was the ninth consecutive season that Barkov has scored at least 20 goals in a season. Niko Mikkola was credited with a secondary assist on the play.
The Panthers moved in front 2-1 with 4:56 remaining in the period. Sam Reinhart guided the puck from right point. Barkov raced in with it through the right circle and steered the puck in with a one-handed poke shot from the low slot for his second tally of the contest and 21st goal in 2023-24.
The Red Wings rallied back on a power-play goal with 4:00 to go. Dylan Larkin got his 29th goal of the campaign on a snap shot from the right goal line. Patrick Kane and Gostisbehere both had assists during the man advantage.
There were no goals in overtime and it would go to a shootout. Only one of six shooting attempts were converted. Reinhart scored with a snap shot on the Panthers first attempt.
