Pirates Sweep Marlins

The Pittsburgh Pirates completed a four-game series sweep of the Miami Marlins with a 9-7 victory on Sunday at loanDepot park. Miami began with a 0-4 record for the first time since the 2001 season.
The Marlins wore their powder blue jerseys in the regular season for the first time in team history. They had worn that color shirt for spring training games since 2018.
The Fish will host the Los Angeles Angels next to finish off the seven-game opening season homestand. The Pirates will stay on the road to face the Washington Nationals on Monday.
Miami(0-4) attacked early and scored five runs with no outs in the bottom of the first. Jake Burger singled to shallow left field to score Luis Arraez. Burger had an RBI in four consecutive games for the first time in his MLB career. Bryan De La Cruz then got a base hit into right field to load the bases.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. came up next and blasted a grand-slam home run to right-center field on a 2-0 pitch for his first homer of the year. Bell, Burger and De La Cruz scored in front of him on the play. Chisholm had two grand-slam homers in 2023, which were the only grand-slam home runs hit by the Marlins last season.
Pittsburgh(4-0) answered back in the top of the second with three runs and trailed 5-3. Alika Williams tripled to the left-field wall for Jack Suwinski and Jared Triolo to score.
The Pirates would later have the bases loaded. Bryan Reynolds hit a soft ground ball to left side of the infield and Williams reached home.
The Bucs closed it to 5-4 in the top of the fourth. Ke'Bryan Hayes singled into center field and Connor Joe crossed the plate.
The Marlins extended their lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the fourth. Avisail Garcia homered on the first pitch of the frame to right-center field for his first home run of the season. It was first home run for Garcia since April 26, 2023.
In the seventh inning, Pittsburgh took the lead for the first time in the contest. Rowdy Tellez cracked a three-run homer to center field with Hayes and Edward Olivares aboard. It was the first home run for Tellez with his new team. The Bucs have the most runs batted in with two out in Major League Baseball this season with 17.
Miami tied the contest with one out in the bottom of the ninth 7-7. Pinch-hitter Nick Gordon connected with a solo home run to right-center field for his first round-tripper of the campaign.
The Pirates reclaimed the lead with two runs in the top of the 10th. Jason Delay had a sacrifice bunt for Oneil Cruz to score. Four baters later, Michael A. Taylor walked with the bases loaded and Williams scored to make it 9-7.
