The Miami Heat extended their lead in the Southeast Division as they defeated the Atlanta Hawks 101-92 at American Airlines Arena on Monday night. The Heat, second in the Eastern Conference, have now won both meeting this season with the Hawks, third in the Eastern Conference, and lead them by 1 1/2 games. Miami improved to a 10-1 record at home.
Both teams stayed within striking distance of each other as neither led by more than three points in the first quarter and the Hawks were down by two points after one quarter. Miami's biggest lead in the first half was at 36-31 at 10:14 of the second quarter and they led 56-54 at halftime.
Miami(14-5) increased the margin to double digits with 2:15 left in the third quarter and led 82-74 at the end of the period. Atlanta(12-6) never came closer than eight points behind in the final quarter and took the loss. The Heat had their biggest lead of the game at 100-86 with a little over two minutes to go.
Dwyane Wade had 26 points in 34 minutes of play and Chris Bosh contributed a double-double with 14 points and ten rebounds. LeBron James added 27 points, seven rebounds and six assists in 40 minutes for the Heat.
Josh Smith led the Hawks with a team-high 22 points and six assists in 37 minutes. Al Horford popped in a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds in 40 minutes while DeShawn Stevenson poured in 12 points.
