The Miami Marlins traded shortstop Yunel Escobar to the Tampa Bay Rays for minor league shortstop Derek Dietrich on Tuesday. Escobar was slated to be the starting third baseman for The Fish in 2013. He batted .253 with nine home runs and 51 runs batted last season with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Escobar was picked up in a blockbuster trade from the Toronto just three weeks ago along with Jeff Mathis, Adeiny Hechavarria and four minor league prospects for Jose Reyes, Josh Johnson, Mark Buerhle, John Buck and Emilio Bonifacio. The deal almost did not go through based due to the experience exchanged from one side to the other. Some have thought it was a salary dump for the Marlins to lower their salary cap and overall value of the franchise.
