It came down to the final play of the game for the Blanche Ely Tigers to survive the Dillard Panthers 18-12 in the annual Soul Bowl held at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday night. The Tigers have won six of the last seven Soul Bowls against the Panthers.
Blanche Ely had the only score in the first quarter when defensive end Trevor Goodwin intercepted a pass by Dillard quarterback Anthony "Mo" Hasam and returned it 5O yards for a touchdown and a 6-O lead.
Early in the second quarter, the Panthers tied the contest at 6-6 when running back George Golden rolled up the middle with a two-yard touchdown run.
Tigers linebacker David Blanchard recovered a fumble when Panthers punt returner Jordan Merrell lost the ball near midfield. Blanche Ely capitalized on the situation with just a couple of minutes left in the first half as running back Arthur Forrest busted through the right side of the line for a touchdown from one yard out.
In the third quarter, Forrest extended their margin to a twelve-point gap with 5:55 to go as he rushed into the middle of the Tigers defense for a two-yard touchdown.
Dillard dominated the final quarter and almost came back to win. Golden scored his second touchdown of the game on a three-yard run with under ten minutes remaining and closed the deficit to six points. The Panthers had one final shot on the last play of the game when Hasan threw an incomplete pass into the end zone from inside the eight-yard line.
Both schools will be on the road for the first round of the FHSAA playoffs on Friday. Blanche Ely travels up to Palm Beach Gardens and face the Dwyer Panthers at Blum Stadium. Dillard heads for Traz Powell Stadium in Miami to challenge the Carol City Chiefs.
