The Fort Lauderdale Strikers were eliminated from the playoffs by the New York Cosmos 2-1 in an NASL semifinal on Saturday at MCU Park in Brooklyn. The Strikers still have not beat the Cosmos in the current NASL era. They had gone winless in nine games during the last three seasons. The Cosmos were playing just their second home game ever on Coney Island.
Fort Lauderdale struck first during the l6th minute to lead l-O. Midfielder PC got the ball on the right side near the edge of the penalty area. He took a l5-yard ground shot that went through the legs of a Cosmos defender, past goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer and into the far side of the net.
It took a while for New York to tie the game late in the first half. Forward Gaston Cellerino scored from close range after goalkeeper David Meves made a glove side on a direct kick from the left side by midfielder Marcos Senna.
Legendary forward Raul gave the Cosmos their first lead of the game during the 6lst minute. Midfielder Daniel Szetela tapped a pass to his left and Raul put a left-footed shot from l6 yards off the right post and into the net.
