It is a return for Mater Academy Charter Lions head coach Rocco Casullo as his current team will go up to Fort Lauderdale and challenge his former team the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders at Brian Piccolo Stadium in Fort Lauderdale on Friday night in a Class 7A regional final. It is his first season in charge of Mater Academy.
Casullo was named the head coach for St. Thomas Aquinas and replaced the legendary George Smith who retired from that post. He was there for four seasons and helped the Raiders win two FHSAA state championships in 2012 and 2014..
After losing their two previous playoff appearances in Palm Beach Gardens as the defending state champions against Dwyer, St. Thomas Aquinas finally defeated the Panthers 24-7 last week in a regional semifinal. STA have not lost a home playoff game since 2003 and will appear in their 12h consecutive regional final.
University of Florida commit Jake Allen returned last week as their starting quarterback. The Raiders will mix their rushing attack with running backs James Charles and Jaxson Kincaide. Wide receivers Sam Bruce, Michael Irvin Jr. and Trevon Grimes are the primary targets for Allen to look for down the field.
