The Miami Marlins played in the first game of a doubleheader and fell to the Washington Nationals 5-4 in a seven-inning contest at Nationals Park on Saturday. The Marlins did previously play in a doubleheader during the 2020 Major League Baseball season involving seven-inning games on August 5 at the Baltimore Orioles.
The Nationals knocked out Marlins starting pitcher Daniel Castano in the first inning. Trea Turner was able to score from third on an infield hit to the hole on the left side by Asdrubal Cabrera. Two batters later, Josh Harrison singled into left field and Howie Kendrick scored.
Washington(10-13) made it a three-run margin in the bottom of the third. Kendrick drove in Turner on a sacrifice fly to center field.
Miami(10-10) surrendered another run in the fourth inning and were down 5-0. Harrison knocked in Kurt Suzuki with a single into right field. Victor Robles later lined a ball to left field and Corey Dickerson dropped the ball when catching it. It was classified as a sacrifice fly for Harrison to cross the plate.
In the fifth inning, the Marlins broke the shutout and crawled back into the contest. Jonathan Villar sliced a base hit into shallow left for Magneuris Sierra to score. Matt Joyce followed with his first home run as a Miami player on a 1-1 pitch to right-center field which scored Villar. Jesus Sanchez came out with the bases loaded and walked to score Jesus Aguilar to make it 5-4.
