The Miami Marlins came back to defeat the New York Mets 5-3 at Citi Field on Monday. It was a make-up contest from August 27 when both clubs protested at the start of the game because of racial injustice.
New York(15-20) went out in front during the third inning. Jeff McNeil drove in Ahmed Rosario on a double to right field. Two batters later, Dominic Smith hit a sacrifice fly into right to bring home Brandon Nimmo for a 2-0 lead.
Miami(15-15) put up four runs in the top of the sixth and took the lead 4-2. Garrett Cooper led off the inning and drilled a solo home run to left-center field on a 1-1 pitch. Three batters later, Lewin Diaz lined a double to the right-center field alley and Matt Joyce scored. Miguel Rojas then knocked in Diaz on a looping base hit into shallow left. Jorge Alfaro followed and doubled to the right-field corner for Rojas to cross the plate.
The Mets answered back and closed it to 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth. Robinson Cano sliced a solo homer to left-center field on a 2-2 count for his sixth home run of the 2020 season.
In the eight inning, the Marlins expanded their lead to 5-3. Brian Anderson lifted a solo home run to left-center field on a 1-0 pitch.
