Marlins starting pitcher Sixto Sanchez made his Major League Baseball debut as they took the Washington Nationals with a 5-3 victory in the second game of a doubleheader at Nationals Park. The Marlins were designated as the home team in this contest.
Washington(10-14) struck first and led 1-0 in the top of the third. Yan Gomes connected a solo home run to center field on a 0-1 pitch.
Miami(11-10) answered back quickly in the bottom of the third against Nationals starting pitcher William Crowe who also was making his debut in the majors. Corey Dickerson towered a two-run homer to right-center field on a 1-1 count with Matt Joyce aboard.
The Fish added two more runs in the fourth inning. Magneuris Sierra was at the plate with the bases loaded with two out when he struck out, but the ball hit the home plate umpire's mask and rolled into the Marlins third-base dugout for Jorge Alfaro to score from third. Pinch-hitter Lewis Brinson followed with a base hit to short which brought in Jon Berti for a 4-1 lead.
The Nationals cut the deficit to 4-3 in the top of the fifth. Victor Robles pounded a two-run home run down the left-field line on a 3-1 pitch with Gomes scoring in front of him.
The Marlins pulled ahead 5-3 in the bottom of the frame. Berti drove in Brian Anderson on a sacrifice fly into left.
