Inter Miami CF finally held their first home opener in franchise history on Saturday night and defeated Orlando City SC 3-2 at Inter Miami CF Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. The home opener had been slated for March 14 against LA Galaxy, however the coronavirus pandemic postponed it and changed the 2020 season for Major League Soccer. It was also the first franchise victory for Inter Miami CF after five straight losses to begin the season.
It started off great for Inter Miami CF as they scored the opening goal at the 12th minute. Rodolfo Pizarro placed a left-outlet pass from the center of the field. Julian Carranza dribbled the ball into the box on the left side and struck an 11-yard shot with his left foot into the low left corner of the net.
Orlando City SC evened it up 1-1 at the 18-minute mark. Daryl Dike took a shot from 14 yards from the right shot which was saved, however he got the rebound in the middle of the box and blasted in a goal from 14 yards into the right side of the net for his first MLS goal.
Inter Miami CF made it 2-1 during the 23rd minute. Ben Sweat kicked a cross from the left side of the field and Carranza headed the ball from the inside the right side of the six-yard box high into the top left corner of the cage.
Momentum continued for Inter Miami CF in the second half in the 49th minute. The team sent a cross from the right wing which was moved across more with a head ball and Pizarro volleyed the ball with his right foot from 11 yards out into the low right corner of the net for a 3-1 lead.
It remained a close contest as Orlando City SC cut the gap again around the 80th minute. Nani was able to score for the Lions.
