Mets Blank Marlins
It was a fine pitching duel as the New York Mets got a combined five-hit shutout over the Florida Marlins 1-0 on Wednesday night at Sun Life Stadium. Both teams end up with a 9-9 split in the season series. Jose Reyes led off the game with a single and scored two batters later on a Lucas Duda double down the left field line. This turned out to be the only run in the game. Mets pitcher R.A. Dickey(8-11), who is 3-0 against the Marlins in 2011, went seven innings and gave up no runs on four hits. Florida left six men on base, including four in scoring postion, during the first three innings. Marlins pitcher Brad Hand(1-6) kept his team in the game giving up one run on three hits in six innings. The Marlins stopped two New York rallies with several defensive plays. The Mets got a two-out double by Jason Bay in the sixth inning. Nick Evans then launched a long shot to the right field wall where Emilio Bonifacio jumped up and reached high to his left for the catch. In the eighth inning, David Wright was on second with two outs. Bay hit a line drive toward left field which was one-hopped by Logan Morrison, and he threw the ball to home plate where John Buck was able to make the tag on a sliding Wright. Florida got one more good opportunity to score in the eighth. Bonifacio led off with a bunt single down the third base line. He advanced to second on an Omar Infante sacrifice bunt down the first base line, then to third on a ground out to first by Morrison. Josh Stinson struck out Gaby Sanchez to end the inning. Manny Acosta would close the door and get the save for the Mets. Marlins third baseman Matt Dominguez picked up his first major league base hit, a single, in the second inning.
