Phillies Take First Game Of Doubleheader
The Florida Marlins made a quick one-day stop in Philadelphia on Thursday for a make-up doubleheader against the Phillies. Philadelphia took the first game 3-1 over the Marlins. The Phllies struck early with a first-innning rally. Placido Polanco got a one-out single and advanced to second on an Anibal Sanchez balk. Hunter Pence doubled into the left field corner to score Polanco. Following a Ryan Howard strikeout, Raul Ibanez hit an RBI double to right scoring Pence for a 2-0 lead. The Marlins had no hits in the first four innings and a combined consecutive eight innings without a hit from the previous game yesterday in Atlanta. Logan Morrison broke the string with a solo home run, his 20th of the season, to right field in the fifth inning on a 3-2 pitch. Marlins middle reliever Ryan Webb gave up a bases loaded walk to Polanco in the seventh inning scoring Brian Schneider. Florida failed to score in the eighth inning. Omar Infante got a one-out double followed by a pinch-hit walk by Mike Stanton. Gaby Sanchez cracked a base hit to left field and Infante was pegged on an Ibanez one-hop throw to the plate. Morrison loaded the bases on a walk, however John Buck struck out swinging to end the inning. Sanchez dropped to 8-8 after pitching six inninngs giving up two run on four hits with seven strikeouts. Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick(8-6) got the win giving up one run on two hits in five innings.
