There was late scoring in this game as the Arizona Diamondbacks edged the Miami Marlins 3-1 on Wednesday at Chase Field. The Fish, now 9-26 on the road, lost two of three games in the series as they head to San Francisco and continue their west coast trip against the defending world champion Giants.
Arizona(39-33) waited until the eighth inning to put up three runs to take the lead. Jason Kubel got a lead-off walk against Jose Fernandez and Josh Wilson came in as a pinch-runner. After A.J. Pollock popped out, Didi Gregorius walked. Mike Dunn came in to relieve for Fernandez and the D-backs countered as former Marlin Cody Ross pinched-hit for Eric Hinske. Ross smashed a three-run homer on a 1-2 pitch to left-center field as the Diamondbacks had a 3-0 lead.
Miami(22-49) could only garner one run in the top of the ninth against former Marlins reliever Heath Bell. Justin Ruggiano led off with a solo homer to left-center field on a 3-2 count for his ninth home run of the season. Ed Lucas followed with a base hit to right and Giancarlo Stanton walked. The Marlins were unable to tie the game as Marcell Ozuna flied out to right, Derek Dietrich popped out to the catcher and Logan Morrison struck out.
