Marlins Sweep Twins

    The Miami Marlins overcame a three-run first inning by Minnesota and defeated the Twins 5-3 at Marlins Park on Wednesday. The Marlins, who have won five of their last six games, completed a two-game series sweep and are now 13-9 in the month of June.
    Tom Koehler ran into trouble in the first inning as Minnesota(34-40) put up three runs. Clete Thomas walked and got to third on a throwing error by Koehler on a pick off attempt. After Brian Dozier walked, Thomas scored on a base hit to center field by Joe Mauer. Josh Willingham followed with a single into right-center field for Dozier to score. Oswaldo Arcia grounded out to first as Mauer crossed the plate. 
    Miami(27-50) evened the game during the fifth inning against Scott Diamond. Placido Polanco led off with a walk then Adeiny Hechavarria flew out to center field. Jeff Mathis followed with his first home run of the season on a 3-2 pitch that went to left field. The Fish got three consecutive base hits by Kevin Slowey, Justin Ruggiano and Ed Lucas to load the bases. Slowey scored on a ground out by Giancarlo Stanton to first.
    The Marlins took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Logan Morrison singled to left field and then Diamond was relieved by Ryan Pressly. Polanco came up a smashed a 3-2 pitch into left field for a two-run homer. It was his first home run since he joined the club in 2013.
    Koehler pitched four innings and allowed three runs on four hits. Slowey burned his former club and upped his record to 3-6 as he gave up no runs on four hits in three innings. Diamond dropped to 5-7 as he surrendered five runs on seven hits in five-plus innings.
