The Florida Panthers were officially eliminated from playoff contention as they lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-0 at BB&T Center on Saturday night. The Panthers will not be in the postseason for the third straight year and the 13th time in the last 14 seasons.
It was not until the second period when Tampa Bay(48-24-8) scored twice on Florida(36-28-15). Steven Stamkos, who was held without a goal in his last seven games. converted on the first power play for the Lightning. Tyler Johnson sent a cross-ice pass from the right circle and Stamkos one-timed a slapshot from the top left circle by Roberto Luongo at 6:10.
The Bolts increased their margin to 2-0 at 11:19 when got his 42nd goal of the season. Ryan Callahan intercepted a pass from Erik Gudbranson on the left-wing wall. He fed a cross-ice pass to Stamkos and he snapped in a shot from the right-circle dot.
In the third period, Stamkos returned the favor to Callahan 63 seconds into the final frame. Stamkos gave a lead pass in the neutral zone to Callahan on the right side. He crossed the Panthers blue line and scored on a wrist shot from the right-circle dot for his 24th goal.
