The American Heritage Patriots take on the Rickards Raiders in the FHSAA Class 5A state championship on Friday night. It will be an advantage for the Raiders as they play in their hometown at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee while the Patriots have to travel all the way from Plantation.
American Heritage(10-2) are looking for their first state title since 2017 and their fifth championship in school history. The Patriots dismantled Palm Bay 49-0 in the play-in game, defeated Miami Northwestern 12-3 in the regional quarterfinal, slipped by Rockledge 26-14 in the regional final, ousted Eau Gallie 38-18 in the regional final and edged Jesuit 16-13 in the state semifinal. They have outscored their opponents 294-140 this season. Running backs Mark Fletcher and Jerry Dinkins will share the rushing opportunities for them. Quarterback Blake Murphy looks to throw the ball to wide receivers Orande Gadsden II, Michael Watkins III, Nicholas Whitton, Vinson Davis III and Emory Clemons.
Rickards(9-1) is on a seven-game winning streak and have outscored their opponents 231-151 this year. The Raiders got by Ed White 21-14 in a play-in contest, knocked off West Florida 38-16 in a regional quarterfinal, beat Ribault 44-26 in a regional semifinal, squeezed by Baker County 14-10 in a regional final and topped Dunnellon 26-24 in a state semifinal. Quarterback Michael Townsend can toss the ball to wide receivers Torey Walker, Rico Watkins, Greg Turner Jr. and Caleb Acoff. Running back Andrevious Robinson will get the majority of rushing attempts from the backfield.
