The Champagnat Catholic Lions take on the University Christian Christians in the FHSAA Class 2A title game on Wednesday. It will be the first of eight football championship games to be played this week at Doak Campbell Field on the campus of Florida State University in Tallahassee.
Champagnat Catholic(10-2) is the defending Class 2A state champions and have outscored their opponents 508-168 this year. They are looking for their third title in the last four years and will be playing in their fifth consecutive state title game. The Lions have been dominate in the postseason as they pounded Glades Day 65-7 in the play-in game, blanked First Baptist Academy 42-0 in the regional quarterfinal, beat Moore Haven 49-18 in the regional semifinal, smashed Community School of Naples 67-7 in a regional final and squashed Seffner Christian 56-14 in the state semifinal. Running back Donovan Jones, Walter Phillips and Curmary Butts will get the bulk of the rushing attempts. Quarterback Tyous Taylor can connect passes to wide receivers Malik Rutherford, Benson Prosper, Keshawn Brown, Jaylin Terzado and Kelvin Blount.
University Christian(8-4) have won six straight games and averaged 42 points in those contests. They have outscored their opponents 397-230 this season and look to get their first state title since 2016. The Christians shut out Munroe 42-0 in a play-in game, took Aucilla Christian 41-16 in a regional quarterfinal, routed St. John Paul II 41-7 in a regional semifinal. handled North Florida Christian 35-20 in a regional final and topped Foundation Academy 28-14 in a state semifinal. Quarterback Desirro Biles intends to find his primary target wide receiver Ja'won Grey on passing plays. Running backs Orel Gray, Joe Carter and Alan Woods look to get rushing opportunities.
