The Cardinal Gibbons Chiefs knocked off the Bolles Bulldogs 35-21 in the FHSAA Class 4A state title game at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee on Thursday. The Chiefs won their second state championship in the last three seasons. The Bulldogs failed to capture their state-record 12th state championship in their second straight title game.
Bolles(10-3) reached the end zone on the second play of the contest 45 seconds into the first quarter. Running back Kade Frew rushed through the middle of the line on a 60-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead.
Cardinal Gibbons(8-1) evened it up 7-7 at 11:54 of the second quarter. Quarterback Brody Palhegyi quickly threw a four-yard pass to wide receiver Jesse Anderson in the front right corner of the end zone.
The Chiefs got a 14-7 lead with 6:33 left in the second. Wide receiver Troy Stellato broke two tackles on the right hash marks to score on a seven-yard touchdown pass from Palhegyi.
In the third quarter, Cardinal Gibbons extended their lead to 21-7 on their first drive at the 8:41 mark. Palhegyi tossed a screen pass to the left side and running back Kamari Moulton sprinted 32 yards down the left sideline.
The Chiefs made it a 21-point margin with 4:52 left in the fourth quarter. Moulton rushed the ball in from four yards out.
The Bulldogs gave up another score with 2:25 remaining and they trailed 35-7. Palhegyi connected a nine-yard touchdown pass to Stellato on the right side of the end zone.
Bolles answered back on the ensuing kickoff 13 seconds later. Wide receiver Davis Ellis ran the ball back 65 yards and scored a touchdown.
After a Chiefs punt was blocked, the Bulldogs closed the gap to 35-21 with 47 seconds to go. Frew busted through and reached the end zone from one yard away.
