The Cardinal Gibbons Chiefs travel up I-95 and take on the Cocoa Tigers in a Class 4A state semifinal on Friday night. The winner will play in the state title game in Tallahassee in two weeks.
Cardinal Gibbons(6-1) have plenty of confidence in getting their first regular season win in school history over Class 7A state champion St. Thomas Aquinas. They have won their last two playoff contests on the road. The Chiefs downed Clewiston 37-7 in the regional quarterfinal, held off Gulliver Prep 29-7 in the regional semifinal and held off American Heritage 26-14 in the regional final. They have outscored their opponents 189-76 this year. Quarterback Brody Palhegyi looks to guide their offense after Mason Polivka stepped in for the last two games. He can fire the ball to a slew of wide receivers that includes Troy Stellato, Davon Kiser, Bryson Williams, A.J. Jenkins, Luke Dean and Gabriel Morgan. Running backs Torrence Miller and Kamari Moulton can get their share of carries.
Cocoa(10-0) is undefeated and looking to win their first state title since 2016. They have dominated and outscored their opponents 450-80 this season. The Tigers have scored at 27 points in every contest this year. Cocoa blanked Hudson 62-0 in a regional semifinal and routed Tampa Catholic 44-8 in a regional final. Quarterback Diego "D.J." Arroyo will guide their team down the field with passes to wide receivers Davis Mallinger, Jamaryae Robinson, Donovan Giles and Lakota Wojciehcowski. Running backs O.J. Ross, Rontavious Farmer and Demargio Grimes look to get their rushing opportunities.
