The Miami Central Rockets host the Palmetto Tigers on Friday night at Traz Powell Stadium in a state semifinal game. The Rockets defeated the Tigers 34-30 in the state semifinal contest last year. The victor will go to Tallahassee in two weeks for the FHSAA Class 6A state title game.
Palmetto(9-3) are currently on a five-game winning streak. They have outscored their opponents 332-190 this season. The Tigers playoff path included smashing Blake 50-8 in a play-in contest, winning by forfeit over Brandon in a play-in game, knocking off Fort Pierce Westwood 31-21 in the regional quarterfinal, slipping by Hillsborough 26-20 in the regional semifinal and edging Lake Gibson 28-24 in the regional final. Dual quarterback Josh Siplin can throw and carry the ball. Running backs Sagel Hickson, Robert Gavin and Cleve Benson will get their rushing opportunities. Wide receivers Zorian Geathers, Quay Smith and Alzavien Houston are expected to make catches from Siplin.
Miami Central(6-1) is riding a six-game win streak and they are two wins away from capturing their second straight Class 6A state championship. The team had two forfeit play-in wins against Immakolee and Archbishop McCarthy. The Rockets downed Lely 42-16 in a regional quarterfinal and defeated Naples 31-21 in a regional semifinal and blanked Dunbar 40-0 in a regional final. Running back Amari Daniels will get the bulk of the carries from the backfield. Wide receivers Yulkeith Brown and Robert McMinn can make pass receptions from quarterback Keyone Jenkins.
