The Jesuit Tigers challenge the American Heritage Patriots at Heritage Field in Plantation on Friday night. It is a FHSAA Class 5A state semifinal contest between both schools.
Jesuit(14-0), who enter their fifth state semifinal in the last six years, will play in their state-high 15th game of the 2020 campaign. They have fallen in the state semifinal game during the past two years to eventual Class 5A state champions Cardinal Gibbons in 2018 and Miami Northwestern in 2019. The Tigers have outscored their opponents 547-180 this season. They slammed River Ridge 50-7 in the play-in game, stopped Chamberlain for the second time this year 35-7 in the regional quarterfinal, held off Bishop Moore 43-23 in the regional semifinal and defeated Jones 40-24 in the regional final. Running backs Joquez Smith will get the majority of the carries along with Myles Coates. Quarterback Joe Pesansky can fire the ball to wide receivers Junior Vandeross, Jaydin Girard, Carter French, Jarriett Buie Jr. and tight end Michael Leonardo.
American Heritage(9-2) is looking for their first state title since 2017. They return home after two straight games in Central Florida. The Pats have outscored their opponents 278-127 this year. The Patriots blanked Palm Bay 49-0 in a play-in game, knocked off defending Class 5A state champion Miami Northwestern 12-3 in a regional quarterfinal, defeated Rockledge 26-14 in a regional semifinal and prevailed over Eau Gallie 38-18 in a regional final. Quarterback Blake Murphy looks to find wide receivers Orande Gadsden II, Nicholas Whitton, Michael Watkins III, Emory Clemons and Vinson Davis III down the field on pass receptions. Running backs Mark Fletcher and Jerry Dinkins will get their rushing opportunities from the backfield.
