The Miami Palmetto Panthers edged the Vero Beach Indians 10-7 at the Citrus Bowl on Friday night. The Panthers prevailed in the Class 8A regional final and next take on the Osceola Kowboys.
Miami Palmetto(6-1) got on the scoreboard at the 5:25 mark of the first quarter. They were able to get a 42-yard field goal from Diego Navia to go up 3-0.
Vero Beach(8-3) lost the ball on a shovel pass as it was intercepted by defensive tackle Leonard Taylor. The Panthers capitalized as Brashard Smith took a snap in the wildcat formation, went up the middle and scored from seven yards out for a 10-0 lead with 1:04 remaining in the first.
The Indians cut it down to 10-7 later with 4:41 left in the fourth quarter. Jackson Nairn threw a swing pass to the left side and wide receiver Ephraim Floyd raced into the end zone from 15 yards away.
Vero Beach had a chance to win the contest with under three minutes left. Nairn fumbled the ball when he scrambled out of the pocket and Panthers defensive end Dwight Dassaw pounced on the ball for the turnover.
