The FHSAA Class 1M state champions the Chaminade-Madonna Lions stopped the FHSAA Class 2M state finalist the American Heritage Patriots 28-16 at Heritage Field on Friday night. Both of these Broward County high schools were undefeated heading into this game.
Chaminade-Madonna(4-0) raced out to a 21-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. Defensive back Curtis Janiver intercepted a pass and returned it for a 50-yard score three minutes into the contest. Lions quarterback Cedrick Bailey threw a 12-yard strike to wide receiver Jeremiah Smith with six minutes left in the opening quarter. Bailey connected a 25-yard touchdown pass to Smith with three minutes remaining in the first. American Heritage(2-1) got a 26-yard field goal from Gavin Henry at 10:41 of the second quarter and were down 21-3 at halftime.
The Patriots reached the end zone as running back Byron Louis scored on a one-yard touchdown run up the middle and trailed 21-10 after three quarters. The Lions extended it to 28-10 at the 8:44 mark of the fourth quarter on a three-yard touchdown run through the right side by running back Arrwin Jackson. The Pats added a touchdown at the midway point of the final quarter and were behind 28-16.
