Panthers Escape Hurricanes

The Florida Panthers held off the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2 on Friday night at Amerant Bank Arena. The Panthers will head for Nova Scotia and play in the Kraft Hockeyville game against the Ottawa Senators on Sunday. The Hurricanes will not have a preseason contest in the next six days.
After a scoreless first period between both teams, Florida got out to a 1-0 lead at the 3:41 left in the second period. Josh Mahura centered the puck from the left wing. Mackie Samoskevich walked in through the slot, faked a forehand shot at the top of the crease and buried a backhand shot by Pyota Kochetkov for his third goal of the preseason. Gerry Mayhew was credited with a secondary assist on the play.
In the third period, the Panthers increased it to 2-0 at the 2:30 mark with a shorthanded goal. Santtu Kinnunen tipped a centering pass from Jack Drury. Former Canes player Steven Loretz carried the puck down the ice on a breakaway and put in a snap shot from the low slot for his first tally of the preseason.
Carolina made it 2-1 at 3:03 while on the power play. Returning Hurricanes player Anthony Esposito scored on assists from newcomer Michael Bunting and Drury. It was Esposito's second goal of the preseason.
The Canes pulled their goalie for an extra attacker with 2:40 to go. Dmitri Orlov angled a pass from the top of the zone and Brandan Perlini scored on a wrist shot with 1:59 remaining and evened it up 2-2.
Florida quickly regained the lead 3-2 with 1:35 left when Mayhew scored as he snapped a shot from the low slot after a feed from Matt Kiersted in the low left circle. The Cats added an empty-net goal 23 seconds later as Lucas Carlsson flipped a shot from the Carolina blue line.
