Two current FHSAA state champions and former district rivals faced each other on Friday night. The defending Class 5A state champion American Heritage Patriots edged the defending Class 4A state champion Cardinal Gibbons Chiefs 23-20 at Dr. Bud Tight Field.
American Heritage(2-2) started the scoring during the second quarter with a Julian Ramirez field goal. They extended it to 10-0 with 3:34 to go in the second when running back Mark Fletcher blasted up the middle from one yard away.
Cardinal Gibbons(4-1) put up some points prior to the end of the first half and were down 10-3. Adrien Alfieri was able to nail a 26-yard field goal.
The Pats got a 32-yard field goal from Ramirez with 2:44 left the third quarter. The Chiefs closed it to 13-10 just 18 seconds later as running back Kamari Moulton rushed through the left side of the line and sprinted into the end zone from 67 yards out.
The Patriots answered back 14 seconds into the fourth quarter. Fletcher busted in on a five-yard touchdown off-left tackle for a 20-10 advantage.
Cardinal Gibbons took a chance on a 4th-and-goal at the one-yard line and were successful. Moulton went around the left end to score with 7:28 left in fourth and they trailed 20-17.
The Chiefs drove the ball deep into Patriots territory on their next possession. It resulted in an Alfieri 20-yard field goal with 5:33 to go and they evened it up 20-20.
American Heritage would end up scoring last in the game. Ramirez was able to kick a 42-yard field goal in the final seconds the fourth quarter.
