It was a league-record eighth game that the Jaguars had participated in London. The Jags played seven previous contests at Wembley Stadium from 2013 to 2019 and now have a 4-4 record in that city.
Tagovailoa and Jaguars starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence met for the first time in an National Football League contest. Lawrence's Clemson Tigers defeated Tagovailoa's Alabama Crimson Tide 44-16 for the CFP National Championship during the 2018 season.
In the first quarter, Miami(1-5) scored on their first possession. Tagovailoa threw a five-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, who went on a slant pattern through the left hash marks.
Jacksonville(1-5) converted their first field goal of the season after six contests. Matthew Wright booted a 40-yard field goal with 3:54 remaining in the first.
The Dolphins were able to expand it to 10-3 just 45 seconds into the second quarter. Jason Sanders was able to kick a 33-yard field goal. He later added a 24-yard field goal with 5:38 to go in the second for a 13-3 advantage.
The Jaguars closed it to 13-10 with 0:40 left in the second. Lawrence fired a 28-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr. on the right side of the end zone.
Jacksonville scored on the opening drive of the third quarter at the 12:29 mark to take their first lead of the contest 17-13. Running back James Robinson busted in through the right side of the line from one yard out.
After the Jaguars were stopped at the Dolphins nine-yard line on a fourth down, the Fins marched down the field and scored. Waddle caught a two-yard swing pass from Tagovailoa on the left side to give them a 20-17 lead with 10:22 left in the fourth quarter.
It was tied by Jacksonville with 3:40 to go in the fourth. Wright nailed a career-high, 54-yard field goal. Wright then kicked a 53-yard field goal with no time remaining in the game to give them a 23-20 victory.
