Florida(1-0-0) jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 9:17 mark of the first period. Aleksander Barkov won the faceoff in the right circle. Carter Verhaeghe skated with the puck to the right wing and he snapped a shot that sailed by Casey DeSmith.
In the second period, the Panthers expanded it to 2-0 at 3:57. Jeff Carter had a shot from above the top left circle blocked by the left leg of Gustav Forsling. Frank Vatrano carried the puck out of the zone and connected a lead pass to Anthony Duclair. His backhand shot attempt was poked away by DeSmith, however it went off Mark Friedman in the crease and into the cage.
Pittsburgh(1-0-1) cut the deficit on the power play to 2-1 with 8:15 left in the second. John Marino pushed the puck from his own defensive zone. Dominik Simon made a square pass from the right-wing boards and Danton Heinen scored on a wrist shot from the right circle past Sergei Bobrovsky.
It was evened by the Penguins 2-2 on another power-play tally with 1:02 remaining in the frame as Jeff Carter collected his 400th NHL goal. Kris Letang dropped the puck to Kasperi Kapanen and he raced through the neutral zone to the Panthers blue line. Carter skated down the right wing, fired a shot from an acute angle and it deflected off Aaron Ekblad's stick into the top shelf of the net.
The Pens would two goals in a 30-second span and go in front during the third period. Jake Guentzel fired a shot from the right of the crease which was stopped. He gathered the rebound on the end wall, centered a pass and it went off the right shin of MacKenzie Weegar for a goal at 8:01.
They extended it to 4-2 on a goal from blue paint by Evan Rodrigues. Jason Zucker and Friedman were credited with assists on the play.
The Cats scored with 6:31 left to make it 4-3. Ekblad scored on unassisted goal when he scrambled for the puck in the low slot and put in a wrist shot into a half-empty net.
It was tied by Florida 4-4 with 4:53 to go. Ekblad picked up his second goal of the contest with a backhand shot from the slot area on assists from Owen Tippett and Jonathan Huberdeau.
Florida would end the game in overtime at the 1:37 mark. Aleksander Barkov made a cross-ice pass from the right wing and Verhaeghe ripped in a snap shot from the inner left circle for the game-winning goal and his second goal of the game.
