Homestead Holds Down Cardinal Newman

The Homestead Broncos picked apart the Cardinal Newman Crusaders 22-0 in a kickoff classic on Saturday at Traz Powell Stadium in Miami. Both teams look to go deep into the FHSAA Playoffs this year.
Homestead was a FHSAA Class 3M state finalist for the last two seasons. They got out to a 6-0 lead on a long touchdown run with 1:31 remaining in the first quarter.
The Broncos made it 12-0 with 5:44 to go in the second quarter. Quarterback Malachi Lewis fired a 25-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Malik Penson on the left hash marks.
It became 19-0 for Homestead at the 9:48 mark of the third quarter. Running back Cecil Smith went around the left end from one yard away. They later added a field goal during the fourth quarter.
Cardinal Newman will revisit Dade County for their season opener and face the Monsignor Pace Spartans. The Broncos travel to the Miami Palmetto Panthers next week to begin their regular season.
