The Florida Panthers completed a four-game road trip on Saturday night as they were shut down by the Washington Capitals 5-0 at Verizon Center. The Cats finished the road string with five of a possible eight points. It was the second time this season that they were shut out. Florida(4-6-1) will host Washington(3-8-1) in the second game of a home-and-home series on Tuesday night.
Late in the first period, the Capitals took their first and only lead in the game as right wing Troy Brouwer scored at 17:45. He would pick up his second goal of the game on the power play at 3:36 of the second period. Right wing Joel Ward extended the Caps lead to 3-0 at 11:55.
The Capitals added two more goals in the third period. Left wing Alex Ovechkin nailed his fourth goal this season at 3:49 and center Mathieu Perreault scored at 9:28. Florida pulled goalie Jose Theodore after he gave up the fifth Washington goal in the game and was replaced by Scott Clemmensen.
Theodore dropped to 4-5-0 this season as he made 16 saves on 21 shots. Washington goalie Braden Holtby made 27 saves in the shutout win as he improved to 2-4-0. The Cats outshot the Capitals in two of the three periods and 27-25 overall. The Panthers were scoreless in their one attempt on the power play while the Caps were 1-for-2.
