Florida goalie Jacob Markstrom made his season debut in net on Friday night as the Panthers were defeated by the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-1 at Consol Energy Center. It was Markstrom's ninth game in the NHL as he made 37 saves in the loss. It was the Cats only appearance in Pittsburgh this season.
Florida(5-8-4) was outshot 12-3 in the first period as neither team scored. Panthers defenseman Mike Weaver scored the only Cats goal at 8:25 of the second period from the right point for a 1-0 lead. Defenseman Brian Campbell fed him the puck from the left point for his first goal of the season.
Pittsburgh(12-6-0) tied the game just over two minutes later on the power play as left wing Chris Kunitz scored at 10:26 from the edge of the crease after left wing James Neal placed a shot from the right of the crease.
The Penguins took the lead at 7:49 of the third period as defenseman Matt Niskanen blasted a one-time slapshot from the left point as he received the pass by defenseman Kris Letang on the right point. The Pens extended their lead on a Panthers turnover in their own zone with 4:45 left. Right wing Tyler Kennedy chipped a pass ahead to left wing Matt Cooke in the right circle, his turnover wrist shot was saved and center Dustin Jeffrey tipped in the rebound.
The Panthers were outshot in all three periods and 40-23 overall. The Cats were 0-for-2 on the power play while the Pens were 1-for-4. Pittsburgh goalie Marc-Andre Fleury made 22 saves and improved to 9-3-0 this season. Florida returns home to face the Boston Bruins on Sunday.
