Miami Heat television play-by-play announcer Eric Reid missed the Miami Heat game against the Houston Rockets on Wednesday night at American Airlines Arena due to a death in the family. Jason Jackson took his place on the Sun Sports telecast. Reid had rarely missed a game broadcast over the last 25 seasons as the only original member of the Miami Heat broadcasting crew.
Reid, an Ithaca College grad, joined the Miami Heat prior to their inaugural season in 1988-89 as the game analyst alongside Sam Smith on their television/radio simulcast of games. He would be elevated to play-by-play announcer for the team in 1991-92. The organization eliminated the simulcast in 1992-93 as Reid stayed on the television side. Due to broadcast restrictions by the league, he was allowed to announce the NBA Finals in 2006 and 2012 on a special feed. His calls would appear on eventual NBA Finals videos.
He announced Ithaca College game broadcasts on WICB-FM and WVIC-AM while he was a student. Reid would work for WHCU-AM in Ithaca as a basketball game analyst and later as a play-by-play announcer. He moved on to Providence College where he was the basketball radio play-by-play announcer. He was hired by then Providence College athletic director and current New Jersey Devils CEO, president and general manager Lou Lamoriello. Reid was the radio voice when the team went to the Final Four in 1987 under head coach Rick Pitino.
