Panthers left wing Jonathan Huberdeau had a four-point game and Florida snapped a five-game losing streak as they blew by the Philadelphia Flyers 5-2 at Wells Fargo Center on Thursday night. The last time the Cats won a game was two weeks ago on February 7 in the same arena. The Panthers won two games in a season at Philadelphia for the first time since the 2006-07 season.
Florida(5-7-4) scored three goals in two minutes during the first period. Center Peter Mueller put in his fifth tally at 8:15 then right wing Tomas Kopecky followed with his fourth goal at 8:44. Huberdeau was rewarded a penalty shot at 10:15 and converted it for a 3-0 lead.
Huberdeau extended the margin to 4-0 on the power play with his eighth goal of the season at 11:46 of the second period. Philadelphia(8-10-1) pulled their goalie Ilya Bryzgalov after that score and replaced him with Brian Boucher.
The Flyers broke the shutout with 6:11 left in the third period with a goal by defensman Luke Schenn. Muller scored his second goal of the game less than one minute later at 14:33. Philadelphia answered back with a score one minute later at 15:35 by right wing Jacub Voracek.
The Panthers were outshot in all three periods at a 34-26 margin, however they scored on three of their 10 shots in the first period. The Cats were 1-for-3 with the man advantage while the Flyers were 0-for-2. Florida goalie Scott Clemmensen picked up his first win this season as he made 32 saves and improved to 1-1-2. Bryzgalov only made 11 saves on 15 shots and fell to 8-8-1. The Cats travel to Pittsburgh for their only time this season and face the Penguins on Friday night.
