It is the first weekend of December and for the first time in many years FHSAA high school football state semifinal games will be broadcast on local radio. Bright House Sports Network owns the television and video streaming rights to all FHSAA playoff games and Play On Sports owns the audio/radio streaming rights to all FHSAA postseason games.
Local radio stations are paying a hefty fee to the FHSAA to broadcast Friday's games. South Florida High School Football Show will broadcast the Miami Central and Mainland Class 6A state semifinal game at Traz Powell Stadium on Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM. Mike Levine and former St. Thomas Aquinas quarterback Wesley Carroll will be the announcers for that game.
The other local game in South Florida on Friday night will be broadcast by ESPN 106.3 West Palm Beach WUUB-FM. It is a Class 8A state semifinal between Palm Beach Gardens and South Dade at Harris Field in Homestead. Either Jeremy Marks-Peltz or Ken LaVicka will be the play-by-play announcer for that contest.
There are many different expenses to consider when broadcasting a playoff game. These expenses can include travel, gas, motel, ISDN/computer connection, food, vehicle and paid employees.
WQAM has usually broadcast a playoff football game in the first two rounds unless it is Thanksgiving weekend, a University of Miami game broadcast or a Florida Panthers game broadcast. For once the station does not have any games to program on a Friday night.
Good Karma Broadcasting had used ESPN 760 WEFL-AM as their high school football broadcast for the first couple of rounds until earlier this year when they flipped to Spanish language using ESPN Deportes. ESPN 106.3 has used a roundtable format named High School Hysteria on Friday nights during the regular season and in the first three rounds this year which was brought over from their sister-station ESPN 760.
