The Florida Panthers held off the Washington Capitals with a 3-2 shootout victory on Friday night at the BB&T Center. The Cats have won four of their last five games and look forward to a four-game road trip in Canada.
Neither team scored in the first period, however Dylan Olsen scored his third career goal from the low left circle at 2:13 of the second period to give Florida(11-17-7) a 1-0 lead. Tomas Kopecky and Jonathan Huberdeau got the assists on the play. Nicklas Backstrom evened the game for the Capitals at 16:34 of the second.
During a 4-on-4 situation, a clearing pass off the wall by Mike Green was stopped at the right point by Aleksander Barkov. He skated with the puck toward the middle and ripped a wrist shot at 17:56 for his fifth goal this year and a Panthers 2-1 lead.
Washingon(17-12-3) got an unusual break with 29 seconds left in the period. Joel Ward took a slapshot from the slot area that was saved by Scott Clemmensen, but Mike Weaver kicked the puck from in front of the net off Clemmensen's leg and into the Panthers cage.
After there was no scoring in the third period and overtime, the game went into a shootout. It was a total surprise that it took ten attempts to get the winner of the contest. Both teams would score in two of their first three chances and on their fourth attempt. Following five rounds of missed opportunities, Tomas Kopecky wrapped it up with a shootout tally in the tenth round.
