The Florida Panthers continued their four-game road swing in Canada on Thursday night and beat the Ottawa Senators 4-2 at Canadian Tire Centre. Florida(14-7-5) extended their winning streak to a season-high five games and have won seven of their last eight.
The Panthers jumped out to the lead at 5:39 of the first period. Shawn Matthias made a cross-ice pass from the left side to Jimmy Hayes and he put in a wrist shot from the right inner circle by Craig Anderson. It was the fourth goal by Hayes this season.
Ottawa(14-17-6) tied the game on a questionable goal at 9:17. Clarke MacArthur took a slap shot from the left circle that went off the leg of Chris Neil in the crease area.
Jason Spezza gave the Sens a 2-1 margin as he avoided a check by Dylan Olsen in the right circle and snapped a shot over the left shoulder of Scott Clemmensen with 29 seconds remaining in the period.
The Cats evened it at 2-2 with 2:49 left in the second period. Tom Gilbert fired a wrist shot from the top right circle that was redirected by Aleksander Barkov in the low slot. Barkov compiled his sixth goal in his rookie campaign.
Florida regained the lead at 3-2 with 2:32 to go in the third period as they scored on the power play. Tomas Fleischmann pivoted from the goal line to the right-circle dot and fed Gilbert for a one-timer from the left-circle dot.
Tomas Kopecky clinched the game with a short-handed goal with 1:41 left as he came in from the neutral zone on a two-on-one and snapped a shot from the left circle. It was the first short-handed goal that the Panthers have scored all season.
