The Florida Panthers fired head coach Gerard Gallant on Sunday night following a 3-2 defeat to the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh, North Carolina. It might be one of the most bizarre firings since the team let go Doug MacLean on Thanksgiving Day in 1997. Panthers general manager Tom Rowe has been named the new head coach for the club.
Gallant was in the middle of his third season for the Panthers and had an 11-10-1 record for 23 points. He helped Florida win the Atlantic Division title last season with 103 points after they went 47-26-9 during the regular season. The Panthers fell to the New York Islanders in six games during the first round of the playoffs. Gallant was a finalist for the Jack Adams Coach of the Year Award in 2015-16.
