Hurricanes Overcome Panthers

The Florida Panthers ended up with a 3-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday night at PNC Arena. It was the first game of a six-game road trip for the Panthers. Florida head coach Gerard Gallant was fired after the game and will be replaced by general manager Tom Rowe. Gallant was in the middle of his third season with the club.
Jonathan Marchessault gathered his team-high 10th goal of the season on the power play for Florida(11-11-1) at 5:41 of the first period. Aleksander Barkov put the puck toward the net from the right circle and it was partially deflected by Jaromir Jagr in the low slot. Marchessault raced in and put in the rebound on a backhand shot.
The Cats expanded their margin midway through the first to 2-0 at 9:05 of the frame. Barkov was on the right-wing wall and passed back to Aaron Ekblad on the right point. His shot sailed and hit Michael Leighton and fell behind him into the Canes net.
Carolina(9-8-4) came back from a two-goal deficit with three goals in a four-minute span during the second period. Viktor Stalberg got it going with a tally at 5:21, Jeff Skinner followed with his ninth goal of the season at 7:12 and Derek Ryan put in the go-ahead goal on the power play at 8:49.
