Toronto FC moved by Inter Miami CF 2-1 on Sunday night. The contest was played in East Hartford, Connecticut because of the government coronavirus guidelines of Canada given to sports teams when entering their county.
The loss for Inter Miami CF is bad news for the organization. They are in 12th place in the Eastern Conference and are one point behind Chicago Fire FC for the final playoff spot with one game to go. They will finish the regular season next Sunday at home in Fort Lauderdale against FC Cincinnati, who are last in the Eastern Conference standings.
Inter Miami CF got the first goal of the game during the 42nd minute. Lewis Morgan made a cross from the right end line that was saved, but Blaise Matuidi blasted a one-time, left-footed shot from 14 yards away into the low left corner of the net. It was the first Major League Soccer goal for Matuidi.
The second half would belong to Toronto FC as they overtook Inter Miami CF with two goals. They evened up the contest in the 55th minute. Akinola chest-trapped the ball twice and then volleyed the ball in from eight yards out. The Hartford Whalers fight song Brass Bonanza blasted on the public address system after they scored the tally.
Toronto FC got the go-ahead goal during the 84th minute. Alejandro Pozuelo booted a right-footed penalty kick into the low right corner of the cage.
