The St. Louis Cardinals put up five runs in the first inning to hold on and beat the Miami Marlins 5-2 at Marlins Park on Tuesday night. Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen was ejected during the seventh inning. Both teams will meet in the final game of the three-game series on Wednesday.
Eight batters came to the plate for St. Louis in the first inning. Rafael Furcal singled to center field and John Jay struck out. Matt Holliday got to first on a force attempt as Carlos Zambrano threw the ball into center field for an error and Furcal went to third. Carlos Beltran drove in Furcal on a single to center field for a 1-0 lead. Allen Craig reached first base on a fielding error by Jose Reyes to score Holliday.
The Redbirds would get a three-run homer by Yadier Molina to left field on a 3-2 count as Beltran and Craig would score in front of him for a five-run lead. It was Molina's 12th home run of the year.
Miami picked up one run in the bottom of the frame as Giancarlo Stanton rocketed a solo home run to center field on a 3-1 pitch with one out for his 17th round-tripper this season.
The Marlins cut the lead to 5-2 in the fourth inning. Stanton led off with a double to right field and advanced to third on a ground out by Logan Morrison. Greg Dobbs then hit a sacrifice fly to right center for Stanton to score.
Kyle Lohse(7-2), who won for the Cardinals in the first game ever played in Marlins Park back in April, went 7 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on four hits. Carlos Zambrano(4-6) took the loss as he pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed five runs, none which were earned, on seven hits.
