The Glades Central Raiders beat the Booker T. Washington Tornadoes 18-16 at Traz Powell Stadium in a Class 4A regional semifinal on Thursday night. The Tornadoes had eliminated the Raiders from the FHSAA playoffs four consecutive seasons from 2013 to 2016. Glades Central defeated Booker T. Washington for the first time ever.
There was not much scoring during the first half. Booker T. Washington(5-6) picked up a 27-yard field goal by Andres Borregales with 4:58 left in the first quarter. Glades Central(9-3) got a safety 11 seconds into the second quarter and trailed 3-2.
The Tornadoes made it 10-2 with 1:20 remaining in the second. Defensive lineman Drew Irving stripped Raiders quarterback Davius Richard of the ball and returned it 30 yards for a score.
In the third quarter, the Raiders closed the gap to 10-5 when Jose Garcia kicked a field goal at the 5:45 mark. Glades Central took their first lead of the contest just 21 seconds later when defensive back Elie Fils-Aime made a interception and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown to give them an 11-10 lead.
The Raiders defense later recovered a fumble at the Tornadoes 10-yard line. They capitalized on it as wide receiver Odieu Hilaire caught an eight-yard swing pass on the right side from Richard and he dove into the end zone with 2:16 left in the third to make it 18-10.
Booker T. Washington stayed in the contest during the fourth quarter. Quarterback Torrey Morrison rushed to the left side for a touchdown from two yards away with 3:40 remaining. They were unable to score on a two-point conversion pass to tie the game.
